Australian Pairs 2024

Monday 12th August 2024 10:03am | News

It was forecast to be another scorching day so those in the preliminary rounds were glad of the 11am start. 32 players in 16 pairs played in 4 rounds of 4 ends in the traditional 2-4-2 format. The top 2 pairs played in the afternoon final, which was a very close and entertaining match, with Lynda and Derek Learwood losing by one shot to Peter Andrews and Chris Sharpe.

The traditional 'Spider' was next, with all players standing around the green with one foot in the ditch. On Steve's call, everyone bowled their single bowl at the jack in the centre. The closest bowl was judged to be new bowler Ian, who, it transpired, had borrowed his bowl from Clive, and later donated his winning box of chocolates to Clive.

Once the greens were cleared, the presentations to the winners and runners-up were made followed by the 'Best dressed' award which went to Val and Dave Ansell and their bespoke tee-shirts. Everyone then partook of a wonderful BBQ prepared by Heather and Tony Blakeburn. Traditional fayre was followed by desserts including the now traditional meringues (made by Heather), strawberries and cream. Finally, the raffle prizes were drawn.

Credits: The tournament was managed by Tony Blakeburn and Steve Everett. The day was made possible by a host of members working throughout the day setting up the rinks, tables and chairs, gazebos, parasols, etc. Refreshments for the players and guests throughout the day were managed by regular stalwart Jean Shrubb and 'a team' of helpers, and Chris Bunton assisted Tony with the BBQ. Denise Goodall organised the raffle prizes. Finally, thanks to everyone who returned the clubroom to 'normal'. Well done everyone!
